00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:16.937
<v Jamie>The Weekly Thing, issue 109. Jun 8, twenty nineteen. Published June 8, twenty nineteen. By Jamie Thingelstad. In this issue: Michael Pollan cooking, Apple audacity, GTD workflow, iOS 13 overview, watchOS 6, iPadOS, Shortcuts automation, Shopify commerce report.

00:00:17.537 --> 00:00:32.611
<v Jamie>This week was the end of the school year for our kids. It was another year along in grade school for Tyler, but Mazie celebrated the significant milestone of moving on from Junior High and next year going on to the “big show,” aka, High School.

00:00:33.111 --> 00:00:55.261
<v Jamie>We went to her promotion ceremony today and heard several speeches from select kids in her class. Some heartfelt, some funny, all a little goofy or a bit awkward in that teenager transition sort of way. As some kids were called up for recognition, Tammy and I remarked of ones that seemed like they were in there twenties and others that seemed more kid-size still.

00:00:55.761 --> 00:01:21.624
<v Jamie>During the ceremony, I felt a lot of pride for my daughter and her friends, and all that they have done to get this far. I also felt that sense that in another dozen years, they will be starting down the path to adulthood and making significant contributions. I loved the optimism and positivity that they showed. They beamed with it, while all were expressing a “freak out” about the pending high school transition.

00:01:22.124 --> 00:01:42.969
<v Jamie>It was a special moment, one I’m thankful I was able to be part of. It was also a moment that made me think we need to do this more in life. Celebrate the important moments. Take note of the positivity we can bring to a project. And don’t worry about being a little goofy or awkward, even though you are well past those transition years.

00:01:44.369 --> 00:01:46.267
<v Jamie>Now, the Featured Links section.

00:01:46.867 --> 00:01:50.915
<v Jamie>Link one. How Cooking Can Change Your Life, Michael Pollan, YouTube.

00:01:51.415 --> 00:02:01.423
<v Jamie>Great, short talk from Michael Pollan on the importance of the fundamental act of cooking food for ourselves and our families. Via Patrick Rhone and Swissmiss.

00:02:02.323 --> 00:02:05.516
<v Jamie>Link two. Apple’s Audacity, Stratechery by Ben Thompson.

00:02:06.016 --> 00:02:16.467
<v Jamie>Thompson's recap of the WWDC twenty nineteen announcements is insightful. He gave a lot of attention to the new Sign In with Apple capability and the privacy components of it.

00:02:16.967 --> 00:02:37.576
<v Jamie>Quote. This is the context for Sign In with Apple: developers can now let Apple handle identity instead of Facebook or Google. Furthermore, users creating accounts with Sign In with Apple have the option of using a unique email address per service, breaking that key link to their data profiles, wherever they are housed. End quote.

00:02:38.076 --> 00:02:54.069
<v Jamie>I've been using Maskmail to create unique email addresses and one of the things that frustrates me is how many websites block services that allow you to generate random email addresses. One upside to Apple doing this is I don't see people trying to block them.

00:02:55.469 --> 00:02:57.317
<v Jamie>That's the end of Featured Links.

00:02:58.717 --> 00:03:00.631
<v Jamie>Now, the My Weekly Photo section.

00:03:01.231 --> 00:03:10.813
<v Jamie>Peony Flowering in Lyndale Rose Garden. June 2, twenty nineteen at 4:01 PM Lyndale Rose Garden, 1500 E Lake Harriet Blvd, Minneapolis MN.

00:03:12.213 --> 00:03:14.270
<v Jamie>That's the end of My Weekly Photo.

00:03:15.670 --> 00:03:17.518
<v Jamie>Now, the Notable Links section.

00:03:18.118 --> 00:03:22.443
<v Jamie>Link one. In Conversation with Juan Porral and Gregory Haley, FOD NYC.

00:03:22.943 --> 00:03:44.807
<v Jamie>Greg was one of my roommates in college and his passion for architecture and design has always been so front and center. Reading this interview with him it reminded me a lot of people that build software as well. Greg highlights that design brings people together and is relatable. There is a lot of technology that aspires to do the same thing.

00:03:45.707 --> 00:03:50.067
<v Jamie>Link two. How to Organize Your Life With GTD (Step-By-Step Workflow Guide).

00:03:50.567 --> 00:03:58.315
<v Jamie>Good introduction and overview of GTD. I've been using GTD for 10+ years and plan on using it for another 10 and more.

00:03:59.215 --> 00:04:03.592
<v Jamie>Link three. An update on Sunday’s service disruption, Google Cloud Blog.

00:04:04.092 --> 00:04:13.376
<v Jamie>When the biggest cloud providers in the world have issues it’s a good reminder on how hard it is to run technology platforms, at scale, continuously.

00:04:13.876 --> 00:04:36.689
<v Jamie>Quote. In essence, the root cause of Sunday’s disruption was a configuration change that was intended for a small number of servers in a single region. The configuration was incorrectly applied to a larger number of servers across several neighboring regions, and it caused those regions to stop using more than half of their available network capacity. End quote.

00:04:37.189 --> 00:05:00.195
<v Jamie>Sounds similar to other big outages, unintended consequences of a change or accidental scoping of a change. These changes come from expert administrators, so the machines follow the direction. I don't think it'll be that long before we build some skepticism into our platforms to not always trust even an expert administrators direction if the scope of that change is large.

00:05:01.095 --> 00:05:06.663
<v Jamie>Link four. The Full List of Automation Triggers in Shortcuts for iOS 13, MacStories.

00:05:07.163 --> 00:05:18.667
<v Jamie>This is a pretty big power user feature coming to iOS. Being able to trigger a Shortcut on the events shown here will bring a whole new set of customization capabilities to Shortcuts.

00:05:19.567 --> 00:05:23.638

<v Jamie>Link six. iOS 13: The MacStories Overview, MacStories.

00:05:35.880 --> 00:05:54.518
<v Jamie>I really dig these improvements coming in iOS 13. Scheduling Shortcuts to run on a schedule opens up a whole bunch of new things that you can do on your phone. The photos changes look great. I don't use Reminders, I’m an OmniFocus user, but the improvements there will be welcome by many people. Good stuff!

00:05:55.418 --> 00:05:59.056
<v Jamie>Link seven. watchOS 6: The MacStories Overview, MacStories.

00:05:59.556 --> 00:06:04.564

<v Jamie>This looks like a compelling DNS service.

00:06:31.484 --> 00:06:40.361
<v Jamie>Quote. The first cloud-based private DNS service that gives you full control over what is allowed and what is blocked on the Internet. End quote.

00:06:40.861 --> 00:06:43.083
<v Jamie>I’m still leaning towards using Pi-hole.

00:06:43.983 --> 00:06:47.055
<v Jamie>Link eleven. An Exercise Program for the Fat Web.

00:06:47.555 --> 00:07:04.555
<v Jamie>This may have convinced me to jump into Pi-hole and better protect privacy for my entire home network. I was using the Eero Plus service but I've found that to have some performance issues, and I no longer trust that it will be true to it’s mission now that they have been acquired.

00:07:05.455 --> 00:07:07.539
<v Jamie>Link twelve. A People Map of the US.

00:07:08.039 --> 00:07:09.966
<v Jamie>This is really cool and fun to play with.

<v Jamie>Quote. A People Map of the US, where city names are replaced by their most Wikipedia’ed resident: people born in, lived in, or connected to a place. End quote.

00:07:20.531 --> 00:07:25.113
<v Jamie>it’s very interesting to drill down to towns you know and see the names highlighted.

00:07:26.513 --> 00:07:28.409
<v Jamie>That's the end of Notable Links.

00:07:29.809 --> 00:07:31.367
<v Jamie>Now, the Give Back section.
