00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:18.382
<v Jamie>The Weekly Thing, issue 114. Aug 24, twenty nineteen. Published August 24, twenty nineteen. By Jamie Thingelstad. In this issue: WebKit tracking prevention, WeWork IPO, Apple Card launch, Apple Arcade 4 dollars and 99 cents/month, Automattic on Tumblr, plastic recycling myth.

00:00:18.982 --> 00:00:36.166
<v Jamie>I've been thinking lately about how great the summer has been and how quickly time just keeps on moving. I’m doing my best to take it all in and make the most of it all. Fall is in the air, the first day of school is just around the corner, and the last of the summer checklist awaits.

00:00:36.666 --> 00:00:41.084
<v Jamie>Have a great weekend and enjoy some fun links with your Saturday coffee!

00:00:42.484 --> 00:00:44.382
<v Jamie>Now, the Featured Links section.

00:00:44.982 --> 00:00:48.121
<v Jamie>Link one. WebKit Tracking Prevention Policy, WebKit.

00:00:48.621 --> 00:00:53.531
<v Jamie>Want to know why I use Safari (WebKit) exclusively to browse the web? This is why.

00:00:54.031 --> 00:01:39.220
<v Jamie>Quote. WebKit will do its best to prevent all covert tracking, and all cross-site tracking (even when it’s not covert). These goals apply to all types of tracking listed above, as well as tracking techniques currently unknown to us. If a particular tracking technique cannot be completely prevented without undue user harm, WebKit will limit the capability of using the technique. For example, limiting the time window for tracking or reducing the available bits of entropy — unique data points that may be used to identify a user or a user’s behavior. If even limiting the capability of a technique is not possible without undue user harm, WebKit will ask for the user’s informed consent to potential tracking. End quote.

00:01:39.720 --> 00:01:43.722
<v Jamie>Simple and clear. Aligned with the user and what they should get.

00:01:44.622 --> 00:01:47.836
<v Jamie>Link two. The WeWork IPO, Stratechery by Ben Thompson.

00:01:48.336 --> 00:02:14.382
<v Jamie>WeWork filed it’s S-1 to go public and it is drawing a lot of attention. There was a lot written about it, but I could only get time to read one of them so I picked Ben Thompson's. Two other articles worth a look are WeWork isn't a tech company; it's a soap opera - The Verge which is a bit more salicious, and a detailed article What is We!? Understanding the WeWork IPO - Byrne Hobart - Medium by a former banker.

00:02:14.882 --> 00:02:42.782
<v Jamie>I like Thompson's two-sided Bull and Bear look at WeWork. Comparing it to AWS is good, but I think the demand and adoption curve is so different that the comparison is strained. The references to WeWork Corporate Governance issues are worth noting. After Uber's horrible culture, one has to wonder about a company that seems to have so much self-dealing. Add to that the vast amount of money involved and I wonder if this isn't a future Enron-like story.

00:02:44.182 --> 00:02:46.031
<v Jamie>That's the end of Featured Links.

00:02:47.431 --> 00:02:49.345

00:04:00.127 --> 00:04:05.298

00:04:15.813 --> 00:04:33.916
<v Jamie>Quote. The dump truck, at 45 tons, ascends the 13-percent grade and takes on 65 tons of ore. With more than double the weight going back down the hill, the beast's regenerative braking system recaptures more than enough energy to refill the charge the eDumper used going up. End quote.

00:05:11.712 --> 00:05:18.089
<v Jamie>Link eight. 'Plastic recycling is a myth': what really happens to your rubbish? Environment, The Guardian.

00:05:18.589 --> 00:05:24.241
<v Jamie>So mostly plastic just gets sent somewhere we can’t see it and then, well, nothing really after that.

00:05:25.141 --> 00:05:29.221
<v Jamie>Link nine. The Impact of Meditating every day, Pascal Precht's Blog.
